Coogi X Pure
Coogi, formerly known as "Cuggi", is an Australian brand founded by Jacky Taranto in 1969. The Melbourne-born brand initially targeted American and European tourists visiting Australia to entice them to purchase garments that would remind them of their time down under. It wasn't until nearly 18 years after the company was founded that the name changed from "Cuggi" to "
Coogi" to better reflect indigenous Australian names.
Coogi is best known for their knitted sweaters with vibrant colors and asymmetrical designs, however, the brand also carries item including, but not limited to, women's knit dresses, tee shirts, shorts, jewelry, and shoes.
Coogi skyrocketed in popularity in 1994 when rapper Biggie Smalls name dropped the brand in his hit song "Big Poppa" saying "However, livin' better now,
Coogi sweater now". Because of Biggie Small influence at the time,
Coogi became the hottest knitwear company of the 90's. Biggie's association with the brand was even referenced in an A$AP Ferg song that says "
Coogi down to the socks like I'm Biggie Poppa".
Coogi declined in popularity in 2002 due to financial issues, however, many people believe the decline had something to do with the death of
Coogi's biggest influencer Biggie Smalls. In 2014 the brand regained popularity due to the comeback of 90's trends. Celebrities such as Drake, Snoop Dog, Mac Miller, and A$AP Mob members have been spotted in the infamous
Coogi sweaters. Since the launch of
Coogi Reimagined in 2014, the brand has continued to create bold pieces that blend classic features with a modern touch and slimmer fit.
